Svaneti - amazing land on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus, which is an exceptional example of the combination of mountain scenery with medieval-type villages and defensive towers. Surrounded by 3 000-5 000 meter mountain peaks, Svaneti is the most highly populated area located in Europe.

Four of the 10 highestpeaks of the Caucasus are located in this region. The highest mountain of Georgia - Mount Shkhara (of altitude of 5 201 meters (17 059 ft)) is located in this area. Other famous mountain peaks are Tetnuldi (4 974 m / 16 319 ft), Shota Rustaveli (4 960 m / 16 273 ft), Ailama (4 525 m / 14 842 ft).

The most beautiful mountain in the Caucasus, Ushba (4 710 m / 15 453 ft), is located to the west of Mestia, the main town of Svaneti, which also has several museums and architectural monuments. Upper Svaneti is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
